Using this Handbook

This handbook has been developed for managers and staff working at all levels in care homes, supported living or domiciliary care services. 

It provides a range of guidance which will support the service and individuals to meet regulatory responsibilities and provide the best care and support possible.

Unless specified otherwise, all the guidance in the handbook applies to everyone.

Throughout the Handbook, the term 'registered person' is used. The registered person is the person registered with the Care Quality Commission as either the registered manager (care homes) or the registered provider (other service types). This is in line with the terminology used by the CQC.

This Handbook is fully functioning across a range of devices and browsers. This includes:

  • Desktops;
  • Laptops;
  • Tablets;
  • Smartphones (may not comply with older smartphone technology);
  • Internet Explorer (Windows 7, 8 and 8.1);
  • Microsoft Edge (Windows 10);
  • Google Chrome;
  • Mozilla Firefox;
  • Apple Safari.

In order to make this Handbook as accessible as possible, you can also change the size of the text/layout using the accessibility functions of your device.
